This recipe is fantastically easy, and the end result is absolutely delicious, so really it’s a win-win! Try adding a few dollops to chocolate brownies before they’re cooked for an extra special treat.
Now, if I’m honest..I cheat at this recipe. It is typically made with milk and sugar, hence ‘dulce de leche’ – ‘sweets made of milk.’ However, it is a lot easier to make it with a can of sweetened condensed milk and a pinch of salt, and the outcome is delicious.
400g tin of sweetened condensed milk
a pinch of salt
Preheat the oven to 220c/425f.
Pour the condensed milk into a pie dish, and sprinkle it with the salt. Tightly cover the top with tin foil, and then place the pie dish into a large roasting pan. Add enough water to the roasting pan to come 3/4 of the way up the outside of the pie dish, and put it in the oven for 1 hour.
After an hour, remove it from the oven, and whisk the condensed milk until smooth. Recover and put it back in the oven, refilling the water before you do do.
Repeat after 45 minutes, and then every 30 minutes until it is as you like it! I left mine in for around 2 hours.
Pop it in a jar, and when completely cool put on the lid and put it in the fridge. Keep for up to a week. Delicious.
